Luis Suárez was presented on Sunday as a new reinforcement for Nacional in front of thousands of fans at the Gran Parque Central. The Uruguayan forward arrived at the club where he made his professional debut in 2005.
After stepping onto the field of the venue where 'Bolso' plays at home, the 'Pistolero' expressed his joy at returning to his beloved team. "I am convinced that I took the right step for the right club and for the right country to prepare for the World Cup."
Similarly, he thanked the constant support of the fans. "At no time did I prioritize the economic aspect, because if I had, I would already be in another country. What I needed was to play and maybe I needed affection (...) and in the last few weeks, Nacional has given me too much affection (...) I needed affection to arrive in good shape at the World Cup, emotionally and football-wise."
"There were impressive offers in terms of salary, but I thought, 'I'm going to Turkey or I don't know where and I'll prepare for the World Cup, but what about my family?'" he added. The all-time leading scorer for the Uruguayan national team said that although he had "difficult days, feeling sad about not knowing what to do," since he and his family made the decision, they are "happy."
Messi greeted Suárez
Suárez also spoke about the support he received from some of his fellow footballer friends, such as Lionel Messi. "Leo wished me all the best. He told me, 'You will be with your family, you will be close to your loved ones, you will be in your country, it wasn't something you were considering (now), but destiny is written.'"
The player also said that his arrival will probably attract more attention to Uruguayan football, and it is a good opportunity to "set an example" of behavior in the stands.
