Liverpool started the new English season on the right foot by defeating their great rival, Manchester City, 3-1 in the traditional Community Shield, with a goal from their star signing, Uruguayan Darwin Núñez, who overshadowed a misfiring Erling Haaland in front of goal.
This match, exceptionally played in Leicester due to the Women's Euro Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, doesn't necessarily reflect the performance of both clubs throughout the season.
The Reds, who had finished one point behind the Citizens in the previous Premier League season, opened the scoring through Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 21st minute, before Argentine Julián Álvarez equalized 20 minutes before the end.
But a penalty scored by Mohamed Salah (83) and a header goal from Núñez (90+3) gave the title to Jurgen Klopp's men.
Erling Haaland missed an easy goal in stoppage time, shortly after Darwin Núñez sealed the score.
Haaland's miss inside the area, when the score was 3-1, probably wouldn't have changed the name of the champion, but it remains strange for a player who had scored 86 goals in 89 matches with Dortmund.
Liverpool conquered their first Community Shield, equivalent to the Super Cup, since 2006, while Uruguayan Darwin Núñez scored his first goal as a Red in an official match.
The question of the Norwegian prodigy's adaptation to English football, who was a starter for this match, and to Manchester City's style of play in particular, will be one of the keys to the reigning champions' season.
