Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Nadine Dorries, culture secretary, appeared to forget the Commonwealth Games took place in Glasgow in 2014.

Nadine Dorries appeared to forget that Glasgow hosted the Commonwealth Games during media rounds to promote this year’s event.

While praising the showpiece in Birmingham, the Culture Secretary said the UK has not experienced a sporting occasion on such a grand scale since the London 2012 Olympics.

She made no mention of Scotland’s biggest ever sports event – when it hosted the Games back in 2014.

Speaking to the BBC, Ms Dorries said: ‘I arrived last night and the city is buzzing today. It’s fantastic to see.

‘I don’t think we’ve had a sense of occasion, particularly a sense of sporting occasion, like this since the 2012 Olympics. It’s amazing for Birmingham, and for the West Midlands, and for sport itself.

‘It’s a great day and it’s exciting.’

The apparent snub did not go down well with some social media users.

Trevor Andrews tweeted: ‘Oh dear Nadine, seems she forgot Scotland is part of the UK’.

Bob White added: ‘Another politician who doesn’t do detail. Where have we seen that before?’

Tom Moffat commented: ‘Same error on C4 News last night. Did you not hear me shouting at the TV?’

And Ross Munro quipped: ‘Nads doing her little bit for Scottish independence’.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has been contacted for comment by Metro.co.uk.

It was not the Culture Secretary’s first sporting gaffe.

Speaking at an event ahead of the Rugby League World Cup last month, she hailed Jonny Wilkinson’s iconic drop goal as ‘special moment’ in the sport’s history.

Wilkinson kicked Sir Clive Woodward’s team to an historic victory against Australia in Sydney nearly 20 years ago.

But the legendary fly-half was representing England’s Union side – League’s rival code.
