Cruz Azul did not need to have control of the ball to defeat Tigres UANL in the match corresponding to the first matchday of the Liga MX Apertura 2022 Tournament. The home team once again showed that they have the same defensive problems as in the previous championship, and Miguel Herrera is once again being questioned.
Without reinforcements and with many doubts surrounding the board, Cruz Azul gave a great display of greatness to snatch a hard-fought victory from Tigres at the San Nicolás Volcano, making it clear that Diego Aguirre and his team are going all out in the Apertura 2022.
La Máquina fought head-to-head against one of the most powerful squads in the league and ended up winning a spectacular match in Monterrey. As expected, Tigres and Cruz Azul put on a show. Both teams tried to impose their style and looked for the opposing goal regardless of counterattacks.
But Cruz Azul struck first in the 16th minute through Rafael Baca, one of the most criticized players by the cementer fans, who opened the scoring on the university field with a powerful right-footed shot inside the area.
Despite having the advantage, Diego Aguirre's Máquina did not change their posture, but the urgency of the felinos and the passionate crowd forced La Máquina to retreat and allowed Tigres to gain prominence, although Sebastián Jurado was very alert in the back to prevent a goal.
In the second half, a motivated Tigres equalized the match just after the whistle, thanks to a scandalous error by Luis Abram, who lost the ball to Sebastián Córdova in his own half and he passed it to the unmarked Florian Thauvin, who beat Jurado in the one-on-one.
Everything pointed towards a felina comeback, but Cruz Azul stayed alert and at 62 minutes it again pierced the auriazul goal thanks to a venomous cross from Uriel Antuna that found Ángel Romero arriving from behind the northern defense.
Cruz Azul started to gain confidence and Tigres became more and more pressured, but Sebastián Jurado made an unthinkable mistake trying to save a shot from Sebastián Córdova that slipped through his hands to once again tie the match at 74'.
The celestes lost momentum and the home team was determined to secure the victory. However, when the match seemed to end in a draw, the referee awarded a penalty to Cruz Azul, which was well executed by Santiago Giménez at the end of the match.
