Sources consulted by ESPN stated that Carneiro is the top choice of Cementera's board at the request of coach Diego Aguirre, who previously coached the Uruguayan striker, now 26 years old, and will become a free agent starting from Friday, July 1.
Nicknamed "La Joya", Carneiro stands at 1.92 meters and weighs 82 kilograms. He recently scored the winning goal for Liverpool in a 1-0 victory against Fénix, securing the Torneo Apertura 2022 of the Uruguayan First Division.
"I believe that there has been an improvement, although I don't think I am yet the same Carneiro that many have seen, but after such a long time without playing, it is complicated. In the final stretch, I have found my best version. Also, in the last few games, I have played more as a center forward, perhaps that's why I have been closer to the goal, and by adding goals and assists, it draws more attention," Carneiro said on June 7, in an interview with Radio Sport 890 from Uruguay.
"I always felt more comfortable as an attacking midfielder, turning and facing the field. I also know how to play with my back to the goal, but opponents try to prevent me from turning and having the goal in front of me. I feel more comfortable when I turn and have the game in speed," Carneiro said.
Carneiro made his debut in the First Division in 2015, and in 2018, he moved to Sao Paulo, coached by Diego Aguirre at the time. However, he did not get the desired continuity, which led him to pursue football in Switzerland, where he never officially debuted. In January of this year, he returned to Uruguay due to the birth of his daughter and with the goal of getting more minutes, which he will now seek with Cruz Azul if his signing is finalized.
