Ramos Rizo recalled what not only the last months, but years have been like for César Ramos at a local and continental level, as he held that his level prevented him from being called up for the World Cup qualifiers as well as the important matches in Liga MX.
Felipe Ramos Rizo, former World Cup referee and ESPN analyst, confessed that the appointment of César Arturo Ramos Palazuelos as Mexico's refereeing representative for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar came at the worst moment in the referee's career.
"He is a capable referee, but the appointment comes at the worst moment in Mexican football while officiating in the Liga MX," said Ramos Rizo to ESPN after learning the final list of referees.
Ramos Rizo recalled what not only the last months, but years have been like for César Ramos at a local and continental level, as he held that his level prevented him from being called up for the World Cup qualifiers as well as the important matches in Liga MX.
"Although in Mexico, he is going through one of his worst moments, the appointment comes when he hasn't officiated a final in two years and in the last stage of the Concacaf qualifiers, he was not appointed for the last three matches by the Confederation, so he will have to improve greatly to make a better performance in the World Cup," he said.
Despite everything, he recounted that Ramos' call was to be expected due to the credentials he obtained in the previous World Cup in Russia, in which the photo of Cristiano Ronaldo facing him while the referee booked him also went viral.
"In César's case, it was to be expected that he would be the Mexican referee in the World Cup. His record from the previous World Cup and the little he refereed in the qualifiers allowed him this appointment, and he has a good ranking among referees worldwide, so there was no doubt that he would be the World Cup referee," he concluded.
César Ramos will experience his second World Cup participation after being the central referee for Russia 2018.
