The Bundesliga champion has traveled to the Spanish island to "strengthen the team," according to sports director Hasan Salihamidzic
The Bayern Munich, Bundesliga champion, is at the center of criticism from former players and coaches for a weekend "to unite the squad" in Ibiza just after their Saturday defeat in Mainz (3-1).
German champions for the tenth consecutive season, the Bavarian players have traveled to the Spanish island for two days to "strengthen the team," as explained by sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.
This trip, which takes place just after the 3-1 defeat in Mainz last weekend in the Bundesliga, has not pleased former midfielder and German legend Lothar Matthäus, for whom this trip to the world-famous party island "makes no sense."
"Especially after a match like this," he added on Sky.
World champion in 1990, Matthaeus criticized the fact that the players "go on vacation" despite the discontent of the fans with their team's performance. According to him, coach Julian Nagelsmann should have vetoed the trip.
This is an opinion shared by former Bayern coach Felix Magath, who "would not have authorized such a trip."
"I don't know how the team can say: for us, the season ends three weeks early," wondered the 68-year-old coach, now the coach of Hertha Berlin, 15th in the league.
According to the German press, not all players are present on the trip. Captain Manuel Neuer and others like Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman, Dayot Upamecano, and Marcel Sabitzer may not have traveled to Ibiza. AFP
