EUGENE — Two of Oregon’s defensive assistants are headed to the Big 12.

Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter and safeties coach Marcel Yates, who each spent the 2021 season with the Ducks, are expected to go to Texas Tech, according to The Athletic.

FootballScoop first reported the move for DeRuyter, who is in the first year of a three-year deal worth $825,000 annually. Yates is earning $480,000 this season and was to earn $500,000 next season.

They each earned a $10,000 bonus for helping Oregon win the Pac-12 North and will earn an additional $15,000 should they coach in the Alamo Bowl, which isn’t immediately clear if they’ll stay on to do.

With Mario Cristobal leaving UO for Miami, DeRuyter was owed 70% of his salary, or $577,500, and Yates was owed 60% of his, or $300,000, for the next year less any mitigation from what they earn elsewhere.

Oregon (10-3) ranks 37th in run defense (130.5 yards per game), 60th in total defense (371.8 ypg.) and scoring (25.5 points), 88th in pass defense (241.4 ypg.) and 118th in third-down defense (45.7%).

The Ducks play a home-and-home against Texas Tech in 2023-24 beginning in Lubbock.
