"For surfing, it's like going to the World Cup,". That's how Lucca Mesinas summarized his recent qualification to the World Surf League (WSL) circuit, the highest division of this organization, to América Deportes and Canal N. The Peruvian will be the first Spanish-speaking surfer to participate in the men's category of this championship.
Never before had a Spanish-speaking surfer earned a spot in the world's elite surfing, where until now the only representatives from South America were Brazilians like Ítalo Ferreira or Gabriel Medina.
Mesinas follows in the footsteps of his compatriot Sofía Mulanovich, who in 2003 became the first Latin American woman to enter the World Surf League circuit, a tournament she also won in 2004.
The Peruvian earned his spot to compete in the world circuit in 2022 thanks to his score in the Hawaiian waves of Haleiwa (United States), despite being eliminated in the round of 16.
