Historic. Lucca Mesinas, Peruvian surfer, secured his spot in the Championship Tour (CT) 2022 according to calculations made by DUKEsurf.com after the completion of the round of 32 in Haleiwa, Hawaii.
Although there are still seven surfers in competition who are in the rankings and could surpass Mesinas, three of them - Kalani Ball, Ian Gentil, and Billy Stairmand - can only surpass him by winning or finishing second, and since there cannot be more than one second or more than one first, this makes it impossible for Mesinas to drop below 12th place, which still qualifies him for the CT.
The other surfers who are still in competition and could surpass him with lower results are: Jacob Willcox, Samuel Pupo, Callum Robson, and Liam O'Brien. So far, the WSL has not commented on this, nor has the athlete.
As a reminder, Lucca Mesinas participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and finished among the top eight surfers in the world's premier sporting event. "Thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to compete in the first Olympic surfing games and to measure myself against the best in the world, knowing that it can be done," Mesinas said at the time.
