Through its social media channels, the top entity of South American soccer announced this new change with the aim of promoting "greater sporting justice."

Conmebol announced on Thursday that the "away goal" will no longer be a determining factor in the competitions it organizes: Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, and the Recopa Sudamericana. This was announced through its social media channels.

"From now on, all goals in Conmebol tournaments will have the same value, goals scored as away will no longer be considered as a tiebreaker factor," stated the highest entity in South American football.

The sports institution pointed out that this new rule change aims to achieve "greater sporting justice." Some fans celebrated this decision on social media, while others opposed it.

This is an important news for Peruvian clubs such as Universitario, César Vallejo, Melgar, Cienciano, Sport Boys, and Ayacucho FC, who will play in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana next year, respectively.

Conmebol aligns with UEFA

Let's remember that UEFA announced on June 24th that the away goal rule will no longer be a determining factor in case of a draw in all European club competitions starting from the 2021-2022 season.

"Following the recommendation by the UEFA Club Competitions Committee and the UEFA Women’s Football Committee, the UEFA Executive Committee today approved a proposal to remove the so-called away goals rule from all UEFA club competitions (men's, women's, and youth) as of the qualifying phases of the 2021/22 competitions," reads the statement.
