Roger Federer to return to clay court after two years
Swiss tennis player Roger Federer will play his first clay court match in almost two years next month at the Madrid Masters 1000, after the tournament announced the registered players for the event on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old Swiss player is on the list of registered players for the tournament, which will take place from April 27th to May 9th in the Spanish capital, where Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will also participate.
Federer recently returned to the courts at the Qatar Tournament in Doha after thirteen months of absence following two knee surgeries last year. He was defeated in his second match and withdrew from playing in Dubai.
The Swiss player has only won one of his 20 Grand Slam tournaments on clay, when he triumphed at Roland Garros in 2009.
He has only participated in one of the last five Roland Garros tournaments, reaching the semifinals two years ago.
Federer has not won a title on clay since Istanbul in 2015; his most recent Masters victory on this surface was in Madrid in 2012. AFP
