The period of Giovani dos Santos with América raises questions about his performance and two former teammates explain the reasons why he has not consolidated
In the midst of the controversy surrounding Giovani dos Santos' level of play, former teammates of the América player in the National Team and together U-17 World Champions, express their point of view on the matter. Ever Guzmán states that Giovani himself should ask himself "why he has not been able to consolidate in América", while César Villaluz believes that perhaps he has not been lucky enough to find a coach who trusts him and brings out his best performance.
In an interview with ESPN Digital, Ever Guzmán stated that he greatly admires Giovani and that in general, he will always speak as his fan, although he does not escape from reality and points out that "one would like to see every weekend that he gives us his explosive and enjoyable football, as he plays quite well" and added that "these are things that he should question himself: why so many injuries, why this, why that?, but that's his own business. It's up to him now. We don't know what he has been through. We are not with him every day. What I want is to see him on TV and that he does very well and gives us those gem goals he scores".
Ever Guzmán, who will continue playing for the Hartford Athletic team (in the USL Championship of the United States) next season, stated that he will "never speak ill of the 2005 generation, as I appreciate them all. A couple of years ago, I saw Gío and Vela in San Antonio; we had a very good talk", it feels great that they remember the times we spent as kids, and the affection is still there.

He points out that he admires Giovani and has always followed his career "and for me, what he has done has been incredible. He played in World Cups with Mexico, scored great goals. I see him more as a fan and I will always speak well of him. I am always aware of his triumphs, his successes. I would like to see him score many goals in América and become an idol, as he has been in the National Team. For me, he has had an enviable career for any Mexican" and adds that unfortunately, the injuries "have hindered his process of becoming an idol in América, because he has the quality, without a doubt".
VILLALUZ SAYS HE HAS NOT FOUND A COACH WHO GIVES HIM CONFIDENCE
According to César Villaluz, another member of the 2005 golden generation, ever since he has known Gio, around the age of 15, and the years they spent together in the U-17, U-20, U-23 national teams, and the senior team, he has always been the same player with quality who makes a difference. However, he acknowledges that in recent years he has been inconsistent in his performances and attributes it to a lack of continuity and the fact that "perhaps he has not found a coach who trusts him and can make him stand out and be an important player in his team".
"As a person, he hasn't changed. Everyone speaks based on their own experience. I had the opportunity to spend time with him and he always treated me the same way; my treatment towards him is also the same. He never changed," detailed César Villaluz, who plays for the Cancún team in the Liga de Expansión.
"Lately, he has lacked continuity so that he can continue to build rhythm and gain confidence and stand out. He has the qualities, they don't disappear overnight, but he has lacked more minutes to continue gaining match rhythm."
César Villaluz believes it is normal for Gio to be demanded due to being in a big team like América, where competition is day by day and the expectation is good performances, championships; he has demands because of his ability, because everyone expects a lot from him and he has the potential to excel. He regrets that when he seems to be at his best, "Gio struggles with injuries" and he has no doubt in stating that his best performances have been with the National Team.
Finally, he said that the least Giovani should do is stop preparing and it was evident that he did not take Miguel Herrera's words well, hence his response. "But he must focus on himself and his team, on continuing to prepare to have better games."
