The Pro 2020: Five Non-Ecuadorian Players Nominated for Best Player of the Year Award
The goalkeeper Javier Burrai, the midfielder Damián Díaz (both from Barcelona Sporting Club) and the forwards Víctor Figueroa (Aucas), Cristian Martínez Borja (Liga de Quito), and Gabriel Torres (Independiente), none of them born in Ecuador, are the five candidates from which the winner of El Pro 2020 will be chosen, the award given by the Professional Football League to the best player of the year.
The organization of clubs revealed the list of nominees on Friday. Of the mentioned players, the only one with Ecuadorian nationality (since 2017) is Díaz, born in Argentina 34 years ago. Burrai (photo) is Argentine, just like Figueroa; Martínez Borja is Colombian and Torres is Panamanian.
LigaPro will also choose the winner in other categories, including the best goalkeeper: Burrai, Walter Chávez (Técnico), Adrián Gabbarini (Liga de Quito), Hernán Galíndez (Universidad Católica), and Agustín Silva (Macará). Earlier this month, the Barcelona goalkeeper won the Carlos Luis Morales Award from LigaPro.
Three winners will be chosen in the defense: a right-back (Byron Castillo, Romario Caicedo, Andrés López, Ángelo Preciado, Pedro Pablo Perlaza), a center-back (Moisés Corozo, Eddie Guevara, Aníbal Leguizamón, Williams Riveros, Richard Schunke), and a left-back (Beder Caicedo, Carlos Cuero, Ángel Gracia, Mario Pineida, Leonel Quiñónez). In the midfield, two winners will be selected (defensive and offensive). Up front, one winner will be chosen among Francisco Fydriszewski, Juan Sebastián Herrera, Martínez Borja, Gonzalo Mastriani, and Torres.
In other categories, the best goal (Damián Díaz, José Carabalí, Willian Cevallos, Cristian Colmán, Braian Molina), the revelation player (Jordy Alcívar, Moisés Caicedo, José Gabriel Cevallos, Leodán Chalá, Kevin Sambonino), and the best coach (Fabián Bustos, Santiago Escobar, Pool Gavilánez, Pablo Repetto, Miguel Ángel Ramírez) will be determined.
