Rio de Janeiro -
The winner of the 2020 Copa Libertadores, which will be defined this Saturday (15:00) between the Brazilian teams Palmeiras and Santos, will pocket an unprecedented prize of $15 million for the title, while the runner-up will receive $6 million, announced Conmebol.
To this amount, the money distributed throughout the tournament in the previous stages of this single final in Rio de Janeiro should be added, so the champion will total $22,550,000, the highest amount in the history of the South American competition.
"As part of its strategic axis to reinvest in football what football generates, the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) increased the volume of prizes for all its competitions by more than 300% since 2016," the organization said in a press release.
But the economic expectations for the champion are unbeatable as they can earn an additional $1,250,000 if they win the Recopa against the winner of the Sudamericana (Defensa y Justicia, ARG), although in the worst case scenario they will receive $750,000 for being in the final.
The Libertadores title guarantees the reigning champion's presence in the following edition from the group stage, where each team is assured of three million dollars if they are eliminated at that stage.
Another secure source of income is the FIFA Club World Cup, in which the representative of Conmebol will win an extra $5 million if they win, although if they finish second they will add 4 million to their account, $2.5 million if they finish third, or two million for fourth place.
"Assuming that the Libertadores champion achieves the best possible results - something for which they would have more than enough sporting merits - they would reach a total of $31,800,000, in around 12 months," the report stated.
Conmebol "made strong increases in the prizes of all its competitions from 2016, going from $71,190,000 in 2015 to $229,300,000 for 2021," the organization concluded. (D)
