Arda Turan, former player of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, is going to be retried for sexual harassment, after a Turkish court has overturned the acquittal sentence issued in 2019 and has ordered a new trial, as reported by the NTV network.
The Turkish player, currently playing for Basaksehir in Istanbul, was sentenced in 2019 to two years and eight months in prison for injuries and for shooting a gun in a hospital for which he did not have a license, but was acquitted of a charge of sexual harassment.
The events being judged date back to October 2018, when Turan fought with the popular singer Berkan Sahin in a nightclub, after Sahin accused him of harassing his wife in the same place.
The footballer admitted the events but denied the harassment, and the court acquitted him, considering that Turan did not know that the plaintiff, Özlem Sahin, was Berkan's wife.
The appeals court has now decided that the court did not properly investigate that Turan had met with Özlem and Berkan Sahin before and did not accept the statements of two witnesses, therefore the trial must be repeated. EFE
