The Mexican football club América fires coach Miguel Herrera

The Mexican football club América fired coach Miguel Herrera on Monday after the 'Águilas' were eliminated in the semi-finals of the 2020 Concacaf Champions League on Saturday.

"América has decided to terminate its employment relationship with Mr. Miguel Herrera, as it no longer aligns with the club's medium-term sports and administrative plan," the club's management said in a statement.

Herrera's dismissal came after a 3-1 defeat against Los Ángeles FC in the semi-finals of the 2020 Concacaf Champions League, adding to the previous elimination in the quarter-finals of the Guard1anes-2020 tournament (formerly Apertura-2020) of the Liga MX.

Furthermore, during halftime of the match against LAFC on Saturday, Herrera was expelled for a brawl with a member of LAFC's coaching staff caused by his temperament. This incident also contributed to América's decision to dismiss him.

"The results achieved on the field and the attitudes displayed do not meet the greatness of the institution, nor the expectations of the club's management, and especially not the fans," América emphasized in its statement.

Miguel Herrera, 52 years old, managed América in two different periods, the first one between Clausura-2012 and Apertura-2013, and the second one from Apertura-2017 to Guard1anes-2020.

In total, Herrera won four titles with América: two league titles (Clausura-2013 and Apertura-2018), one cup (Clausura-2019), and one Campeón de Campeones (2018-19). (D)
