Double from Carlos Tevez and Lisandro López enough for Boca Juniors
Lisandro López and a brace from Carlos Tevez, all in the first half, were enough to make the difference in a match played without an audience, due to the restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic, at 'La Bombonera'.
The start of the match saw Boca and Caracas looking for the goal in two offensive schemes, which first had two failed shots from Franco Soldano and another from Eduardo Salvio for the Argentinean team, with a response from a narrowly missed shot from Ghanaian Kwaku Osei Bonsu for the Venezuelan team.
Caracas was not intimidated by the rival's approach and in the 13th minute they had a clear chance after a handball by Julio Buffarini in the box, which the Uruguayan referee Christian Ferreyra marked as a penalty. Robert Hernández took the shot but his strike was deflected by goalkeeper Esteban Andrada.
From that moment on, the 'Xeneize' regained control and after Tevez hit the crossbar, in the 26th minute a perfect corner kick from Colombian Edwin Cardona found a powerful header from López to place the ball in the upper left corner of Beycker Velásquez.
Boca's footballing and emotional momentum did not diminish and in the 32nd minute, a Colombian combination between Cardona and Frank Fabra ended with a low cross for Tevez, who stretched to convert the second goal.
And two minutes before halftime, Tevez captured a ball after a rebound and on the run from the center to the right, he finished with a thunderous shot to increase Boca's lead.
In the second half, the big question was whether Caracas could secure their fourth qualification for the round of 16 of the Libertadores, a milestone achieved in 1995, 2007, and 2009.
With Libertad's defeat in Asuncion against Deportivo Independiente de Medellín, Caracas needed to reduce their loss in Buenos Aires and had three clear chances but failed to achieve the objective.
First, Leonardo Flores had a narrowly missed shot, then Carlos Rivero had an opportunity with his right foot, and six minutes from the end, a great individual play by Hernández, who found himself face to face with Andrada, but the shot went over the crossbar.
Boca could have extended the score but an erratic night from Eduardo Salvio, combined with a lack of accuracy in the final shot, did not change the result.
