Lewis Hamilton to Start His Own Team in Extreme E Championship

The Formula 1 champion, Lewis Hamilton, will field his own team in the upcoming Extreme E Championship (a new and revolutionary category of off-road electric cars), announced the British driver on Tuesday.

About the Championship

This championship aims to organize races of SUV electric cars in fragile ecosystem areas with the objective of raising public awareness about their protection. Five rounds are planned for 2021 in Senegal, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Greenland, and Brazil.

"It's a great opportunity to be involved from the beginning as an owner in a team," said Lewis Hamilton in a statement.

"My ambitions and my schedule with Mercedes in Formula 1 will prevent me from participating," he added.

His team will be called "X44," his race number in F1, where he won six world titles.

"I am happy to be able to play a different role in this new championship that aligns with my vision of a more equal and sustainable world," he concluded.
