Harry Maguire, captain of Manchester United, was arrested on the Greek island of Mykonos for a fight with other tourists and an assault on police officers, according to AFP sources on Friday.
"Three British men, one of them a football player for an English team, confronted police on Thursday night, injuring four of them, and were arrested," said Petros Vassilakis, a police official from the nearby island of Syros, to AFP.
The arrested individuals will be brought before the prosecutor of Syros this Friday, added Vassilakis.
According to the Greek news agency ANA, Harry Maguire, his brother, and a friend allegedly got into a fight with other English tourists at a bar in Mykonos.
When the police arrived at the scene, they were allegedly insulted and one of the suspects assaulted an officer.
The police asked the three men to accompany them to the police station, but they allegedly escaped, according to Petros Vassilakis.
Manchester United confirmed being informed "of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire".
The 27-year-old English defender is "fully cooperating with the Greek authorities", the club said in a statement released by the Press Association.
"We will not make further comments at this time," Manchester United said. AFP
