The massive infections among the staff and personnel of Dinamo Bucharest and CFR Cluj, from the Romanian first division, are putting the completion of the championship at risk, with four matchdays remaining.

Both teams may be forced to play with youth players to finish the competition

In CFR Cluj, who won the league last year and is second, four points behind the leader in the six-team playoff, another twenty positives have officially been confirmed on Friday, bringing the number of infected people in the club to 26.

"At the moment, there are 26 cases of COVID-19 in CFR Cluj, 16 players and 10 members of the coaching staff," said Justin Stefan, the secretary general of the Professional Football League (LPF), to the state news agency Agerpres.

The LPF already had to postpone the FCSB-CFR Cluj match on July 18 due to the infections in the reigning champion. Romanian football authorities now have to decide whether to postpone Cluj's next match or force the team to use youth players to complete the squad.

The situation is equally desperate at Dinamo Bucharest, a historic team fighting to maintain their category in the relegation playoff.

Dinamo already had to suspend a match due to the infections. Last Wednesday, seven Dinamo players tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of infected in the squad to 18.

The situation has led health authorities to quarantine the entire squad for a period of two weeks, so the team will not be able to play any of the pending matches in the next fourteen days.

The LPF has announced that they will meet with representatives of the television networks that have broadcasting rights and will make a final decision regarding Dinamo's fate in the general assembly that is scheduled for July 30.

Meanwhile, Dinamo's rivals are pressuring them to use their youth players so that the matches can be played, thus avoiding the loss of broadcasting rights fees.

"We are currently analyzing it, but I don't think declaring Dinamo as the loser in the matches is an appropriate option," said the secretary general of the LPF to local media.

"There is the possibility that Dinamo plays the remaining matches with their youth players, but I believe that from a sporting point of view, it would be unjust," added Justin Stefan.

The other possibility mentioned by Stefan is to indefinitely suspend the relegation playoff, although the LPF is not considering it at this time.

The championship leader, the University of Craiova, also has three diagnosed cases in the team, although none of them among the players.
