Messi surpasses Zarra as top scorer in LaLiga history

Messi, who was previously tied with Telmo Zarra at six titles, surpassed the legendary Athletic de Bilbao player after adding his seventh title, the fourth in a row.

The Argentine international, who first won the title in the 2009/2010 season, also lifted the trophy in the 2011/12, 2012/13, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/2019 seasons.

In addition to these titles, Messi achieved another one on Sunday, after ending the season with a total of 25 goals, thanks to his brace in Barcelona's 5-0 victory over Alaves.

French forward Karim Benzema from Real Madrid finished behind Messi, closing the season with 21 goals, four fewer than Messi.

Benzema, whose streak of three consecutive scoring games was interrupted on Sunday at Butarque stadium, achieved his second highest goal tally in the league, following the 24 goals he scored in the 2015/16 season.

Completing the top three goal scorers in LaLiga Santander was Villarreal's forward Gerard Moreno, finishing in third place with a total of 18 goals.

This number allowed the player from Villarreal, who ended the season with a brace against Eibar, to become the top Spanish goal scorer in the competition with three more goals than Athletic's midfielder Raúl García, who counted fifteen.
