Goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert and the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, will go to trial in Asunción due to the lack of agreement in the criminal lawsuit for defamation, slander, and injury filed by the head of the South American football governing body against the former.

Summary:

Defenses from both parties expressed their unwillingness to reach an agreement during the conciliation hearing this Tuesday in the Paraguayan capital before the judge in charge of the case, Cándida Fleitas, attended virtually by Chilavert, who resides in Buenos Aires, as reported by the portal ÚLTIMAHORA.COM.

"We communicate that we do not have the willingness to reach an agreement and based on that, the defense (of Chilavert) stated something similar," said Domínguez's lawyer, Claudio Lovera, to EFE news agency, so the case proceeds to oral and public trial.

Chilavert expressed his intention to go to "oral trial and be televised" during that hearing, as stated by his lawyer, Wilson Marinoni, to the Paraguayan media.

Lovera said that the date of the oral trial will have to be set by Fleitas, a process that will be in person and hopefully will be defined this year.

The President of the Conmebol's lawsuit is based on statements made by Chilavert on social media between September and December of last year, in which "assertions of facts and value judgments are made regarding Mr. Domínguez."

Chilavert has accused Domínguez of corruption through his Twitter account and in different media outlets in Argentina and Paraguay, the country where Conmebol's headquarters are located.

His allegations are not limited to Domínguez's current role, which he has held since 2016, but also during the time he was President of the Paraguayan Football Association (APF), between 2011 and 2014.

Defamation, slander, and libel crimes are punished in Paraguay with sentences ranging from three months to three years in prison.

If the sentence is more than two years, the accused must go to prison, since the suspension of the execution of the sentence, provided for in local regulations and applied to people without a criminal record, must not exceed 24 months.
