The Cruzeiro, one of the most traditional teams in Brazil and that in 2019 descended to the Second Division for the first time in its history, announced this Friday the rescission of the contract of Robinho and Edilson due to the delicate financial situation.

The coronavirus crisis in Brazil, the second country with the highest number of infections (over 600,000) and third in deaths (34,000), has had a direct impact on the accounts of the country's main clubs, some of which were already experiencing difficulties before the pandemic.

"Unfortunately, we need to make that extreme decision. Robinho and Edilson are victorious players who contributed to great achievements and we thank them very much," emphasized Cruzeiro's president, Sergio Santos Rodrigues.

"But the reality and need for austerity at Cruzeiro impose that change. One of the main commitments of our management is to preserve the financial health of the club and that was what motivated the decision," he added.

The board stressed that they will be attentive to the transfer market to "strengthen the team within the current economic reality."
