The president of Olympique Lyon, Jean-Michel Aulas, has sent a letter to the Ministry of Sports proposing a tournament in July. The objective of this championship would be to maintain the rhythm of the clubs still competing in international competitions, as well as those from France, and to ensure continuity for their players.
"It is essential that French clubs be able to start playing behind closed doors in July, like their European counterparts. At least four teams should be authorized to play, three who are playing in the French Cup finals and Lille, which is interested in performing an accompanying role," said Aulas to Le Parisien.
This tournament seeks to ensure that the clubs still competing for the Champions League, Lyon and PSG, can arrive in good condition for the international tournament. Aulas himself had already stated that if the Ligue 1 season was not ended, French clubs would arrive in poor condition to participate in the European tournament. Additionally, Saint Etienne and Lille would join them.
Saint Etienne and PSG are set to play the postponed final of the French Cup due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On the other hand, the Parisian team must also play another final against Lyon in the French League Cup.
