The Opinion of 'Chelís': Reinvent oneself.

After the disappearance of Ascenso MX, El Chelís reflects on the challenge for soccer players after the elimination of the tournament.

No doubt that the topic, in the absence of competitions, gave us something to talk about to every soccer fan was the disappearance of the Ascenso MX. In my opinion, as I have expressed in various ways, it is totally against the decision made, I do not like the essence, it is abusive and short-sighted, and the methods are very inconsistent. In fact, I do not think there is an adequate way to make such an advantageous decision public. But what worries/occupies me is the future of the affected players, and that's exactly what I want to write about.

I quote literally from the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami: "Life is essentially unfair. But I think that even from the unjust situations it is possible to extract what is fair in them. Deciding whether or not it is worth extracting this justice is up to each individual's judgment." A harsh phrase, yes, but also very true. It's a reality that puts us in a position to be protagonists of our lives, where we are forced to take the wheel (and the accelerator) of our story, and leave behind the role of victim which in very few occasions is useful.

I was never a professional soccer player, it was one of my dreams and I tried it with some determination, but apparently I lacked the quality and even more discipline. I read from various former soccer players that, as retirement approaches, there are two very different ways in which it presents itself: the first is when one decides to leave soccer, consciously, in advance and maturely, the athlete plans the date of his last game. On the other hand, there's when soccer leaves someone, that is, when due to external factors beyond the athlete's control, the world of soccer removes the athlete from professionalism. Simply because much of success in life consists of always having the upper hand, the first option is the optimal one.

With the elimination of the Ascenso MX, and the creation of the Development League where one of its peculiarities will be that, apparently, there will only be two players over 23 years old per team, it will leave 211 soccer players without the opportunity to participate. 78% of players will be directly impacted (all numbers, official data from the Federation). Many parents, providers, or athletes with goals and plans will have to reinvent themselves, and my advice is as follows: do not be afraid, you are prepared, the adaptation will be complicated, but the values, especially the discipline that you have developed in the competitive world of professional soccer, is useful in any environment.

When we dedicate ourselves to the same activity for a long time, no matter how complicated and demanding it is, because we get used to its rhythm and demands, that activity becomes our comfort zone, our area of expertise, which we know well. As human beings, we tend to always seek comfort, but when circumstances move us and we are forced to leave it, that's when we truly unleash our potential. At first, we refuse, we seek for the same environment that put us there to help us get out, we make the mistake of looking for the solution in the same place where the problem was created, and this is the first and biggest mistake.

Friends, acquaintances, Ascenso MX players in general, better times will come, it won't be easy, trust yourselves and accept the support of those around you. Whether you continue within professional soccer or have to reinvent yourselves based on your main virtues (which you all have many of), a better future awaits. Just like you gave yourselves in every training session and in every game, life outside of soccer is about the same, total commitment in body and soul.
