RB Leipzig thrashed Mainz 5-0, with a hat-trick from their top scorer Timo Werner, this Sunday on matchday 27 of the Bundesliga, moving up to third place in the standings.
Werner opened the scoring with a goal in the 11th minute. Then Danish Yussuf Poulsen (23') and Austrian Marcel Sabitzer (36') scored, before Werner sealed the victory with two more goals (48, 75).
Werner now has 24 goals in this edition of the German league and reduces his disadvantage with the top scorer, Polish Robert Lewandowski (Bayern), who scored a goal on Saturday and has 27.
It should be noted that the 24-year-old forward is being targeted by clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Liverpool in the upcoming transfer market.
With these three points, RB Leipzig returns to third place, where they were in mid-March when the German championship was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last weekend, in the resumption of the Bundesliga behind closed doors and with strict health protocols, Leipzig drew 1-1 at home against Freiburg and conceded the third position to Borussia Monchengladbach.
