In the history of the Copa Libertadores de América, there have been nine victories by eight goals or more, with teams from Bolivia and some from Ecuador being the ones who suffered the most overwhelming defeats. The site Opta reports on this.

On May 10, 2012, Santos FC beat Bolívar 8-0 in the Copa Libertadores; it is their biggest victory in the history of the competition, along with the 9-1 triumph against Cerro Porteño in 1962.

In this century, in addition to Santos' 8-0 victory over Bolívar, only River Plate managed to win by eight goals or more in the Libertadores; they did it twice, being the only team to achieve it at such an advanced stage of the competition (8-0 victory against Jorge Wilstermann in the quarterfinals).

The teams from Bolivia are the ones that suffered the most defeats by eight goals or more in the Copa, they lost on four occasions; Universitario de La Paz, The Strongest, Bolívar, and Jorge Wilstermann are the Bolivian teams that have lost by eight or more goals in the history of the competition.

The list also includes Círculo Deportivo Everest, classified as the champion of Ecuador in the 1963 Copa. The team from Guayaquil was defeated 9-1 by Peñarol at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, with nothing more and nothing less than five goals from the great Alberto Spencer Herrera, who that day (July 7, 1963) had a duel with his brother Jorge, the central defender.
