David Goffin, John Isner, Karen Khachanov, Eugenie Bouchard, Kristina Mladenovic and Kiki Bertens (the reigning champion) will also compete from their homes in the virtual tournament that will take place between April 27th and 30th, and will be broadcasted live on television and social media.

"This initiative is interesting and it will bring some activity to our sport," said Russian player Khachanov. "I'm excited to challenge my colleagues and show my skills to tennis fans worldwide."

A prize money of 150,000 euros (164,000 dollars) will be distributed in each category. The winners will then decide how to donate the money to players who are facing more financial difficulties due to the cancellation of tournaments because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Another 50,000 euros (55,000 dollars) will be donated to mitigate the social impact of the pandemic.

Each draw will consist of 16 players.

The Madrid Open is one of more than 30 professional tour tournaments that have been cancelled or postponed due to the spread of the virus.

"From the confinement and with the encouragement we are giving each other, I am happy to participate in the virtual tournament of Madrid and, as it could not be otherwise, I will try my best," said Nadal, the player with the most titles in the history of the Madrid tournament, five (2005, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2017).

"I don't know how well I will do (in this tournament), but I hope to be with you and feel your support as always happens when I play at home, this time virtually," he added. (D)
