The doctor from Reims, Bernard Gonzalez, confirmed to have contracted coronavirus, committed suicide at the age of 60. The club confirmed the doctor's decision through its social media platforms, where it pays tribute to him.
"Devastated, the Stade de Reims mourns this Sunday for Doctor Bernard Gonzalez. The [club's] doctor but also of hundreds of neighbors in Reims", wrote the team on its website, describing him as a man of letters and sciences and a "restless curious".
The team's president, Jean-Pierre Caillot, said he was stunned by the news. "I am at a loss for words. This pandemic strikes Reims right in the heart. It leaves us with a personality from the club and a great professional in sports. His mission in the club for over 20 years has been carried out with the utmost professionalism, passion, and selflessness," said Caillot.
The mayor of the city, Arnaud Robinet, a friend of Gonzalez, explained in the newspaper Le Parisien that the deceased had left a message to explain the act to his family, but he was unaware of the content of the letter. "I think, emotionally, of his parents, his wife, his family. He is a collateral victim of COVID-19 because he had tested positive and was in quarantine," said Robinet. EFE
