The defender belonged to Real Madrid for 13 seasons

Gregorio Benito, historic central defender of Real Madrid in the 70s and wearing the white shirt for thirteen seasons between 1969 and 1982, died this Thursday at the age of 73 after a long illness.

At the age of 16, he began to be part of the Spanish team and was always characterized by his physical potential, which allowed him to establish himself as a starter. He played a total of 420 official matches with the club. In addition, 'Goyo', as he was known worldwide, won six leagues and five Spanish Cups during the 13 seasons that he defended the Real Madrid shirt. He was also selected by Spain, being present in 22 matches.

"Real Madrid CF wants to express its condolences and affection to his wife, Paula, his children, Patricia and Rubén, and all his family and loved ones, condolences that it extends to Madridistas around the world. Goyo Benito was always an example of the values of our club," said the official statement from the institution.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Íker Casillas expressed "we continue to receive sad news at a national and global level.
