The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a statement this Sunday.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a statement this Sunday.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has given themselves a four-week deadline to study what to do with the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, "including the possibility of postponement," following the global health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

It is planned that the Olympic Games will take place from July 24th to August 9th, followed two weeks later by the Paralympic Games from August 25th to September 9th.

"In light of the worsening situation worldwide, the Executive Board has taken the first step today in planning for possible scenarios," the note says.

"The IOC, in cooperation with the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, the Japanese authorities, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, will initiate detailed discussions to complete their assessment of the rapidly evolving global health situation and its impact on the Olympic Games, including the hypothesis of postponement," says the world's leading sports organization.

"The IOC is confident that these discussions will be completed within the next four weeks and greatly appreciates the solidarity and collaboration of national Olympic committees and international federations in supporting athletes and adjusting the Games' planning." EFE
