The ATP suspended the men's professional tour for six weeks on Thursday, due to concerns over the outbreak of the coronavirus, which is forcing the cancellation of major sporting events around the world.
The announcement came shortly after Miami-Dade County suspended the Miami Open, following the example of the Indian Wells tournament, which was canceled on Sunday at the last minute.
The president of the ATP, Andrea Gaudenzi, said in a statement that the decision was not taken lightly, adding that the suspension represents a significant loss for players and fans.
"We believe it is a responsible and necessary action at this time to protect the health and safety of our players, employees, the tennis community, and the general public in the face of this global pandemic," he said.
Among the affected tournaments are the Clay Court Championships in Houston, the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, the Monte Carlo Masters, the Barcelona Open, and the Hungarian Open. (D)
