The Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE) will create the Athletes Commission and for that purpose it held the first meetings with the participation of the 1990 Roland Garros champion, former tennis player Andrés Gómez; the 2015 Pan American Games karate medalist, Priscilla Lazo; and former sprinter Ana Caicedo.

Gómez, on behalf of Ecuador, participated last year in Lausanne at the Forum of the Athletes Commission of the International Olympic Committee. "I had the opportunity to be in Lausanne last year, even though I am not an Olympic athlete, I participated in the South Americans, Pan Americans in instances of the Olympic cycle, I was accredited for the Olympic Games. The meeting was spectacular, with many athletes from recent and past Olympic Games. A very valuable experience, which defined that more than 200 national Olympic committees must have their own athletes commission. It is a very important and fundamental issue for the development of the sport in each country," Gómez said.

The objective of the Athletes Commission will be to work closely with active athletes, hand in hand with the COE for IOC programs.

For Caicedo, the commission is very important to attend to the current and future needs of national athletes. "It is an opportunity to help the athletes and their needs and explain how we were able to succeed in achieving our goals," said the former national runner who participated in several tournaments.

The board must be composed of five people, who must comply with certain regulations, among which is having participated in events of the cycle such as the Pan American or Olympic Games. The commission will be the voice of high-performance athletes from Ecuador, both nationally and internationally. (D)
