In the 19th minute, Luis Segovia tried to clear a shot towards Jorge Pinos' goal. However, the Ecuadorian defender's header further complicated his goalkeeper and he managed to save it somehow. Gabigol took advantage of the ball and scored the first goal.
The controversy of the match came in the 21st minute. Willian Arao kicked Beder Caicedo in the chest. The referee called the foul and gave a yellow card to the Flamengo player, but after consulting the VAR and noticing the strong tackle, he cancelled the card and gave a straight red card instead.
Flamengo is leading 1-0 against Independiente del Valle in the second leg of the Recopa Sudamericana.
