Enzo Francescoli, the Uruguayan idol from River Plate, Argentina, was born in Capurro, Montevideo, on November 12, 1961. His impeccable shot and elegance to drive the ball earned him the admiration of 'Millonario' fans, who called him 'The Prince'.
He debuted at the humble Montevideo Wanderers in his native Uruguay in the late 70s, but soon after he arrived at River Plate, where he exploded at his best level. After winning the national title in 1986, he was sold to Europe. He played for Racing de Paris and Olympique de Marseille in France. Later, he also showcased his football skills in Italian stadiums, wearing the colors of Cagliari and Torino.
Enzo Francescoli's football was of such a high level that even Zinedine Zidane became one of his main admirers. That's why Zidane named his son after his idol, Enzo Zidane, who currently plays for Real Madrid Castilla.
In his return to South America, he won everything he set out to do with River Plate: the Apertura tournaments of 94, 96, and 97, the Clausura of 97, the Copa Libertadores of 96, and the Supercopa Sudamericana of 97.
With the 'Celeste', he played in the World Cups of Mexico 86 and Italy 90, and won three Copa América (1983, 1987, and 1995). He retired in 1997, at the age of 36.
