Mourinho's Erratic Week Ends with a Draw
The Portuguese coach was unable to lead his team to another victory. After a promising start at Tottenham, Mourinho has lived his most erratic week: a defeat against Chelsea, a draw against Norwich, and a victory on Boxing Day against Brighton that relieved his stumbles.
Before visiting the bottom club, Mourinho boasted about his work since arriving at Tottenham. He recalled that he replaced Pochettino 12 points away from the Champions League spots and, after managing his team in eight Premier League matches, they were only three points behind the fourth-place team.
However, the defeat against Norwich could bring the Tottenham coach back down to earth. Firstly, for drawing against the bottom of the table. And secondly, because they would once again be five points away from fourth place if Chelsea beat Arsenal on Sunday.
To overcome Norwich, Mourinho opted for Argentine Giovani Lo Celso, who has not been a regular in his lineups since taking charge. The Argentine international had his chance but failed to take it. He was eventually substituted in the second half by Erik Lamela.
With Lo Celso on the field, Tottenham experienced a rollercoaster of ups and downs. They never controlled their opponents, who were in need of points to at least get closer to second last place. Leaving the bottom position was impossible, but they were obligated to win after Watford's victory over Aston Villa.
The London side started the game unfocused. They were overwhelmed by their opponents, who quickly created chances led by Emiliano Buendia, their most dangerous player and the one responsible for serving Mario Vrancic the first goal after stealing a ball in the center of the field. Without a doubt, Buendia was Norwich's most dangerous man.
After Vrancic's goal, VAR saved Tottenham from a goal by Finnish striker Teemu Pukki, who scored marginally offside and was denied a well-deserved goal for Norwich, who deserved to go into halftime with a bigger lead.
In the second half, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen rolled up his sleeves and started to dominate the game and impose logic on the field with a fantastic free-kick goal, which was neutralized six minutes later with an own goal by Ivorian Serge Aurier that made it 2-1.
Aurier's goal was a blow for Tottenham, who had to once again fight back to avoid defeat. In the end, after pressuring Norwich, only Harry Kane from the penalty spot managed to rescue a point for Tottenham.
At West Ham's stadium, Leicester didn't fail in their visit to one of the clubs flirting with the dangerous positions in the Premier League. After losing two consecutive matches this week, against Manchester City (3-1) and Liverpool (0-4), they needed to get back to winning ways to secure their second-place position.
Brendan Rodgers' men didn't win easily. West Ham gave their all and pressed their opponents until the end. However, Leicester survived and won 2-1 despite a penalty miss by Demarai Gray in the first half.
It was one of the scares they experienced before their first joy, which came from Nigerian Kelechi Iheanacho, who appeared after being on the bench for three games and headed in a goal after an assist from Ayoze Perez.
Then, Pablo Fornals scored his first goal in the Premier League for West Ham, but it didn't count for much because Ayoze Perez, who returned to the starting lineup after being a substitute on Boxing Day, provided another assist in the second half. Gray benefited from it and Leicester maintained their second-place position.
