17 teams have secured their spot for the continental and multinational competition, which will be drawn on November 30th in Bucharest.
They are Spain, Belgium, Czech Republic, England, France, Italy, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Austria, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, and Portugal, the latest to join the journey to the final phase of Euro 2020.
Portugal secures their place in Euro 2020
They did it with a victory in Luxembourg, perhaps less emphatic than expected on the scoreboard, with a 0-2 result, and even more challenging at times than imagined, as their opponent had their chances and because the Portuguese team did not break the game until the final moments of the first half, due to lack of depth and inconsistent field conditions, until Bernardo Silvia assisted and Bruno Fernandes eased his team with the 0-1. It was the 39th minute of the match.
They didn't seal the victory until the 85th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 0-2. It was his 99th goal in 164 appearances for the Portuguese national team, with whom he will defend the title in Euro 2020. They are already in the final phase, but as the runners-up in their group, following Ukraine, who managed a last-minute draw against Serbia. The match finished 2-2 in the 92nd minute.
The Balkan team momentarily saw themselves in the European Championship, instead of Portugal, for 23 minutes; from the 1-0 penalty goal by Dusan Tadic in the 9th minute to the 1-1 equalizer by Roman Yaremchuk in the 32nd minute for the team coached by Andriy Shevchenko. Portugal's 0-1 victory in Luxembourg in the 39th minute immediately eliminated them from the continental event.
In the second half, Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the 2-1 and in the 93rd minute, Artem Besedin scored the equalizer for Ukraine to make it 2-2. But Serbia's path to the tournament was already defined as they finished top of Group C4 in the Nations League.
Group H: France and Turkey secure their spots
In Group H, France secured their first place with a 0-2 victory in Albania, led by Antoine Griezmann. The Barcelona forward assisted in the 0-1 goal scored by Corentin Tolisso, who headed the ball into the net from a foul by the French number 7, and Griezmann himself scored the goal for the 0-2 win in just half an hour.
Following France, Turkey finished in second place after winning 0-2 against Andorra, with both goals scored by Enes Unal from Real Valladolid in a span of just 4 minutes, from the 17th-minute opener to the 21st-minute penalty; and Iceland, who finished third and now awaits their opponent in the playoffs after winning 1-2 against Moldova.
Group A: England, Czech Republic, and Kosovo secure their spots
Everything was already decided in Group A. There was no doubt about the leader, England, or their companion on the path to Euro 2020, the Czech Republic, and Kosovo secured their place in the playoffs as the winners of Group D3 in the Nations League.
England continued their streak of victories, winning in seven out of the eight qualifying matches with 37 goals scored. This is an average of over four goals per game, a statistic they repeated on Sunday in Kosovo with a 0-4 victory, with goals from Harry Winks, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, and Mason Mount, three of them coming in the last 15 minutes.
In Sofia, with no audience due to punishment for racist chants, Bulgaria bid farewell to their disappointing qualifying campaign with their only victory in the eight matchdays: a 1-0 win against the Czech Republic. Vasil Bozhikov scored the winning goal with a header.
