Rabbit Punches: A Topic at the Annual Convention of the WBC

Rabbit punches are one of the riskiest situations in boxing. Not satisfied with the danger of regular punches, that is, those allowed by regulations, boxers have to face these illegal punches that sometimes put their lives at even greater risk than when the fight is conducted in a legal manner.

There are too many cases to illustrate the consequences of a rabbit punch. Recently, it caused Prichard Colón to end up in the hospital, undergo surgery to stop the brain bleeding, and then be induced into a coma to prevent brain inflammation and further damage or even death.

The World Boxing Council did not overlook this situation at its annual meeting, using one of its working sessions to try to counteract this type of punch, how to prevent boxers from committing it, and how to react to a dangerous situation.

WBC Statement

The World Boxing Council is committed to paying special attention to preventing the illegal attack known as the rabbit punch.

During the 53rd annual WBC convention, held this time in the wonderful city of Kunming, the WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán confirmed that the organization has paid special attention to this illegal punch. Mauricio also stated that the WBC is determined to take actions to prevent the consequences of this dangerous situation.

Members of the WBC Board of Governors and delegates fell silent after watching a video showing the nature of this toxic foul to the sport.

Mauricio Sulaimán concluded: "We appreciate your support in spreading the message, we will address this situation with decisive actions."
