Uruguayan coach denies match-fixing accusations

Leonardo Ramos, the Uruguayan coach who resigned from his position at Barcelona a week ago, said he had no evidence regarding alleged match-fixing in Ecuadorian football. The former Canary coach reappeared to try to calm the storm caused by his comments on the radio program Sport890 in his country about this issue.

Ramos decided to leave his position after Barcelona's elimination against Delfín in the semifinals of the Copa Ecuador. They had obtained a 4-1 advantage in the first leg, but lost 3-0 in the second leg.

"There has always been a rumor about sports betting in Ecuador," Ramos said to the Uruguayan station. And now in an interview with WQ Radio in Guayaquil, he commented: "What I said was that I heard that because it was on websites, I said that happened because someone told me. What I'm saying is that since I have no evidence, I don't know if it's true, but those rumors did exist."

"Some people misinterpreted it. I say it again, I have nothing, they are just comments. In what I thought was strange, I said nothing, I keep it to myself," he added.

About his departure, Ramos stated: "What happened to me was not pleasant, we left a club that treated us very well and where we worked well. We wanted to be champions of the Copa Ecuador, that remains in my thoughts, but I don't like staying in a place where I saw things I didn't like. My intention was always to win the championship with Barcelona." (D)
