Un goal in the fifth minute of extra time by Kevin Sandoval gave Sporting Cristal victory in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana against Zulia. However, the result served little purpose.
The Sporting Cristal player, entering the area, shot with his left foot after the ball rebounded off an opponent and defeated goalkeeper José Morales. It was 3-2 in favor of the team from Lima at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium.
Andrés Maldonado scored for the Zulia team in the 12th minute and Honduran Brayan Moya in the 86th, while Kevin Sandoval (71' and 90'+5) and Christofer Gonzales (76') scored for the Peruvian squad.
Zulia, who will face Argentinian team Colón in the quarter-finals, took an early lead, but Sporting Cristal did not give up: they scored two goals and kept fighting, but Moya spoiled the party when the match was nearing its end.
With the elimination of the Rimac team, led by Argentine Claudio Vivas, there are no Peruvian teams left in the South American tournaments, while Zulia, led by Francesco Stifano, is the only Venezuelan team still in the competition.
