Hugo Del Castillo became the first Peruvian to win a medal at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. The national representative won the silver medal in Taekwondo, behind American athlete Alex Lee.
Del Castillo achieved a score of 74.90, earning him second place in the poomsae-style taekwondo exhibition event, held at the Callao Sports Center.
"I'm very happy. It's one of the happiest moments of my sporting career, and even better to have achieved it in Peru," said Hugo Del Castillo.
"I was aiming for the gold, but I need to analyze what happened. I'm satisfied with what I've done, but I know I can do better," he added in an interview with RPP Noticias.
