The Work of Roddy Zambrano in Argentina vs. Brazil Match Criticized
The work of Roddy Zambrano, referee chosen by Conmebol for the Argentina vs. Brazil match, was heavily criticized after the first semifinal of the Copa America 2019. The referee defended himself in an interview to Área Deportiva FM program in Ecuador.
"Between Brazil and Argentina, we knew that the loser would blame someone, we knew it, and in those cases, it's the referee. I am calm, it was a dream to referee a match like that," assured the referee.
The Ecuadorian explained one by one the controversial actions that occurred in the South American classic of the Copa America.
"The first foul, Agüero's foul, why don't they show the image from behind the goal? Agüero commits a reckless foul, a foul in attack. From that play, Brazil scored a counterattack goal. I saw that and allowed play to continue," explained Zambrano.
The referee also talked about the incident between Nicolás Otamendi and Arthur. "The VAR reviewed it and determined that it was a 50-50 situation, they didn't call me to review it, they didn't consider it to be a clear penalty," added Zambrano. Finally, he clarified that he never lost contact with the officials in charge of the video assistant referee. "They said that I lost communication with the VAR and that is totally false. I am calm and gave my best," concluded Zambrano.
