A Controversial Incident Involving the Chilean National Team

A great controversy has arisen around the selection of Chile to start the quarter-finals of the Copa America 2019. In the match against Uruguay on matchday 3 of the group stage, Gonzalo Jara assaulted one of the spectators who invaded the field.

According to Article 12 of Conmebol's disciplinary regulations, the player could be sanctioned automatically: "Suspension of at least two matches in the competition for violent behavior or for attacking players or any other person present," the rule states.

However, Reinaldo Rueda has decided to support his player, stating that all Gonzalo Jara did was "to respect his workplace", in response to the invasion of this fan wearing a chicken mask.

"What Jara did was to assert his workplace in the face of a unscrupulous person who violated security and ethics in sports. We have to uphold our office," said Reinaldo Rueda in a press conference.

In the coming hours, Conmebol will have to decide whether or not to sanction the match against Colombia, scheduled for this Friday at 6:00 PM (Peruvian time).
