MEXICO -- Felipe Mora and Carlos Gonzalez have carried 14 years of absence from a Pumas scoring title. Since Bruno Marioni, who won it in Clausura 2004, a player from the UNAM team has not been the top scorer in a tournament. In that time, only Esteban Solari, Ismael Sosa, and Nicolas Castillo have reached a double-digit scoring quota in a semester.

The duo of Mora and Gonzalez has had a good start to the season. Both have contributed to four of the seven goals Pumas have. The Chilean with one goal and one assist, while the Paraguayan scored a brace against Necaxa.

Since 2004, when Bruno Marioni shared the scoring championship with Andres Silvera, both with 16 goals, no Pumas player has appeared at the top of the individual scoring table.

Esteban Solari, in Apertura 2007, has scored the most goals. In that tournament, he scored 14 but finished in third place, four goals behind Alfredo Moreno, who was the top scorer. One semester later, the Argentine reached double digits again but failed to be champion, as he scored 10 goals, three behind leader Humberto Suazo.

It took eight years for a player defending the auriazules colors to reach double digits in goals. Ismael Sosa reached 10 goals in Apertura 2015 but fell short by three goals behind Mauro Boselli, who was the monarch.

The last one to achieve it was Nicolas Castillo in the previous tournament, in which he scored 11 goals, but it was not enough to win the scoring title, which was won by Djaniny Tavares with 14 goals.

With the good start that Mora and Gonzalez have had in Apertura 2018, they have made fans not think about Nico, their last goal scorer. The Chilean scored eight goals in his best tournament, which was Apertura 2017 with Cruz Azul, while the Paraguayan ended last semester with nine goals.
