Angelique Kerber is the new champion of Wimbledon after defeating American Serena Williams with a double 6-3.

German Angelique Kerber defeated American Serena Williams in the final, 6-3 and 6-3, in one hour and five minutes, to win the Wimbledon tournament for the first time and claim her third Grand Slam title.

Defeated by the same opponent in the 2016 final, Kerber took revenge two years later and prevented Serena from winning her eighth individual title at the All England Club, and at the same time equal the record of Australian Margaret Court, with 24 majors.

It mattered little that Serena felt the support of her friend Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, who attended Wimbledon on Saturday, accompanied by the Duchess of Cambridge to watch this match, as promised and announced, and also the previous one between Spanish Rafael Nadal and Serbian Novak Djokovic.

Kerber broke Serena's serve four times, considered one of the best in the world, and sealed her victory quickly to become the first German player to win this tournament since Steffi Graf in 1996.

Serena aspired to become the fourth mother to win a Grand Slam title since the Open Era began, and the first to do so at Wimbledon since Australian Evonne Goolagong, 38 years ago.

The 36-year-old youngest Williams sister, who gave birth to her first daughter Olympia 10 months ago, accepted the defeat, but nevertheless, crossed the net after missing the last point to embrace Kerber, who had fallen to the ground covering her eyes, and then ran to the box to embrace her coach and family members.

With this title, her second this year and her twelfth of her career, and the third in a major after the Australian Open and the US Open, both in 2016, a season in which she also won the silver medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Kerber will appear fourth in the world rankings on Monday.
