The selection of Germany was the big disappointment of the 2018 World Cup. Although the reigning champions arrived as favorites for the title, they ended up being eliminated in the group stage after losing 2-0 to South Korea in the final match of Group F.
For that reason, the defender Mats Hummels decided to dedicate a letter to the fans from the plane back to Germany. And in it, he apologized for the disappointing level shown by the 'Mannschaft' in Russia 2018.
"We started the tournament with great aspirations and now we are on the plane back to Germany. Unfortunately, that's how it is, we didn't have the performance that people expected from us. The pain is very deep, even more so because the World Cup is every four years and we will have to wait a long time to seek our revenge," Hummels wrote after the debacle in Russia 2018.
"We want to thank the fans for their support, for being with us in Russia. We have received numerous encouraging messages on social media. And the critical messages are appropriate and we accept them," added the reference of Germany.
"Starting in September, as a national team, we have the opportunity to redeem ourselves and show that we can do much better," he concluded.
