Gago retains the national featherweight title against Romero in Bilbao.

I won in the tenth and final round by technical knockout in a fight where I was superior and received a headbutt that opened a cut on my eyebrow. There was a monumental booing of the national anthem at La Casilla.

Note

Andoni Gago resisted like a warrior in his second defense (one imposed and the previous one voluntary) of the national featherweight belt. He did it at home, at La Casilla in Bilbao, with more than two thousand fervent fans supporting him in his dispute with Sergio 'Sugar' Romero, a Madrid-based contender proposed by the Spanish Federation based on rankings. The Madrid-born boxer embraced his opponent at the end, saying, "Thanks to all the people of Bilbao, who have treated me with affection." He is a technically better-equipped boxer than the Basque, very complete and brave, but with less punch than 'El Machito' Gago, who entered to the sound of Mexican music. He won by technical knockout. The evening started with a monumental boos to the Spanish anthem (at the end of which Romero, from Vallecas, kissed the Spanish flag) and a strange Agur Jauna (unusual in this type of event).

The Bilbao arena surrendered to the triumph of perseverance, hard work, and sacrifice of the boxer from Otxarkoaga, who gave his best in an intense fight with no time to breathe. "I am a very dedicated guy," admitted the local hero. And he is. Romero was a very tough opponent, who knew how to recover with every attack that came his way and pushed him towards the ropes. He throws punches without fanfare, but he is not conservative, because that is useless against a constantly pressing Gago. The Bilbao native received an unintentional headbutt in the second round. It caused a cut with no consequences, and the Madrid-born boxer received a warning in the third round for a similar incident.

'El Machito' was close to victory in some stages of the fight, but the referee’s intervention came in the tenth round when Romero was trapped against the ropes with no response. Technical victory. Gago once again became the national featherweight (-57.2kg) champion. He now has three Spanish titles and is already thinking about his assault on Europe.

In the other professional fights of the night, the result was the same: victories by decision. First, in a unanimous decision by the judges (60-54 all three) Kerman Lejarraga defeated the lively Ecuadorian Jair Cortés with clear dominance from the Morga boxer, who with a couple more fights aims for the welterweight national title. His punch is tremendous and has caused him two hand injuries in recent times; although he is out of rhythm (in a previous fight to gain leg strength, his opponent lasted only 20 seconds). He has been able to knock down heavyweights weighing around a hundred kilos, and he is one of the hopes of Spanish boxing in the category. The opponent of Lejarraga, the Hungarian Gyula Vajda, could not fight as it was observed that the 28-day period since his last knockout had not passed, and he was not allowed to enter the ring due to current regulations. In addition, the Armenian Mikael Mkrtchyan triumphed over the Nicaraguan Edwin Téllez.
