Despite all the problems that the Spanish National Team has suffered, their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup are still intact. However, this is not thanks to David de Gea, as his performance as goalkeeper leaves a lot to be desired compared to the other players in the tournament.
David de Gea is the only goalkeeper in the 2018 World Cup, out of the 33 who have defended their nation's goal in two games, who has not made any saves. He is not even included in the FIFA ranking, which is currently led by Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa with fourteen saves.
The disappointment that De Gea felt in his debut in the World Cup in Russia, conceding three goals in three shots on goal by Portugal and making a mistake on the second goal from a long-range shot by Cristiano Ronaldo, was corrected in the second game against Iran, keeping a clean sheet even though his opponent did not have any shots on target.
In the last match of the Group B, against Morocco, De Gea will try to regain confidence with a save and appear in the FIFA ranking of goalkeepers, where he is the only goalkeeper who has played but is not listed.
Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa has been the most active goalkeeper in the tournament, with fourteen saves in his two matches, followed by Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with ten and Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas with eight. The only goalkeepers to have a 100% save rate are Uruguayan Fernando Muslera, who has not conceded any goals and has made six saves in 180 minutes, and Croatian Danijel Subasic, who has also not conceded any goals and has saved five shots on goal.
