The captain of the Swedish team, Andreas Granqvist, changed his mind about the participation of Paolo Guerrero in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Initially, the defender said that he did not understand how the Peruvian national team striker was allowed to play.
"I really don't know how Paolo Guerrero managed to come back so quickly. It's sad because it was proven that he tested positive for an unauthorized substance, but he will play. Many were surprised by this, but there you have it," said the captain of Sweden initially.
Peru vs. Sweden: the national team plays its last friendly match before the 2018 World Cup.
In a message on his Instagram account, the Swedish player clarified the matter and approved the presence of the Peruvian striker in the World Cup.
"Many people have commented in headlines that I think Paolo Guerrero should be expelled from the World Cup. What I have said and want to say, in general, is that athletes who use illegal substances should not compete," he wrote.
"Paolo has not been banned for anything and, of course, he is eligible to play. I hope we have a good match against Peru on Saturday night, the first meeting between our two countries, and I welcome both our Swedish fans and all Peruvian followers to Ullevi. See you there!" he added.
